The Uncanny: An Introduction. Nicholas Royle The Uncanny: An Introduction Nicholas Royle First published in 2003. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.
The Uncanny (Ger. Das Unheimliche) is a Freudian concept of an instance where something can be familiar, yet foreign at the same time, resulting in a feeling of it being uncomfortably strange.. Sigmund Freud first put forward the uncanny in a 1919 essay titled Das Unheimliche (Eng: The Uncanny). The essay was translated by James Strachey as The Uncanny and published in 1955 by the Hogarth Press.
This is the first book-length study of the uncanny, an important topic for contemporary thinking on literature, film, philosophy, psychoanalysis, feminism and queer history. Much of this importance can be traced back to Freud s extraordinary essay of 1919, The Uncanny (Das Unheimliche).
The key here is that Freud’s introduction of the unconscious and the mechanism of repression help us understand how we have these uncanny experiences and why they are so disturbing. Something about ourselves is revealed yet, in many cases, this something, because it is a function of the sub or unconscious, is unclear.
If this is the case then imagination would be a necessary condition for an uncanny experience. Moreover, if imagination is a central function of our mind, then uncanniness is integral to the human condition. This suggests uncanny experiences could indeed tell us something profound about ourselves.
Uncanny”, focussing on the manifestations of castration anxieties as well as the cases in which self and Other become blurred. As a necessary complementation of and contribution to the theory of the uncanny I will present Julia Kristeva’s notion of abjectionin connection with Barbara Creed’s notion of the monstrous-feminine.
